AUDIO - 'He's remarkable' Bennett praises Hunt
Outgoing Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has labelled young fullback Karmichael Hunt a Broncos captain of the future, describing the 21-year-old as a “remarkable” player.
Hunt, already an Australian Test player and State of Origin winner with Queensland, received a ringing endorsement from Bennett before the coach’s final premiership match with Brisbane.
“He’s been exceptional from day one,” Bennett said of Hunt. “From the day he first came and trained with us as a 17-year-old he has never faulted one moment of training or playing.
“He was confident then, he stepped up way above our expectations. We put him in first grade on day one and he’s been there ever since.
“Just quite remarkable.
“He’s certainly following the same line as Darren Lockyer.
“He probably won’t finish his career at fullback, I think he can play other positions, but that’s down the track for him.
“But he’s certainly going to be a remarkable player. Well, he is a remarkable player.
Bennett described Hunt as a future captain at Brisbane, and says the fullback is one of the toughest men he’s ever seen in rugby league.
“He’s certainly one of the bravest players I’ve ever coached. He’s fearless, I can’t believe his courage,” Bennett said.
“If I was staying, he would absolutely be captain down the track,” Bennett said.
“It’s not his time yet but it will be one day.”
The Broncos take on Newcastle on Friday night, where a win could see them sneak into the top four to secure a home semi-final.
