Roosters forward Willie Mason’s season appears over after he was taken from the field with a serious knee injury early in tonight's NRL clash with St George Illawarra at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Early reports suggest Mason has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament, meaning he is no chance of figuring in the Roosters finals campaign.

A cleary distressed Mason was taken immediately into the change rooms with the assistance of two trainers.

The Test and NSW forward injured himself when he was tackled in the 10th minute by Ben Creagh and Matt Cooper.

Mason remained on the field but less than a minute later he was back on the ground clutching his leg after knocking it against an opponent trying to execute a tackle.

The news could get worse for the Roosters ahead of the first week of the finals next week with fellow prop Mark O'Meley placed on report for a high tackle on Jason Ryles as Mason was being carried from the field.

A devastated Mason said he would not dwell on his serious injury but use the extended break to come back better next year.

"That's life. I'm not going to cry about it," said Mason.

"These things happen for a reason. Maybe I needed a break like this to re-ignite the flames to pick up and play top level rugby league.

"It's how you come back from things like this that make all these things worthwhile.

"I will come back next year and have a massive crack."
